1995 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient Photographer Fred Maura has more than dedicated 45 years to the development of tourism. His extensive work in promoting the Bahamas stretches back as far as the end of World War II.
As the world re-adjusted to peacetime, the Bahamas became an ideal spot for travelers who wanted to enjoy the end of the war. Many of them had an encounter with Mr. Maura in Nassau while he worked as a news photographer. Mr. Maura joined the Bahamas Development Board in 1947. In those days tourism was only a three-month industry that lasted during the winter. But Mr. Maura and his colleagues did everything possible to maximize exposure for the Bahamas in the news media. Three times per week he would visit the Nassau hotels – Montagu Beach, British Colonial and Royal Victoria. Hotel hostesses would line up their guests for Mr. Maura to photograph them. Afterward, Mr. Maura would mail the photographs to the visitors’ hometowns. The strategy was to get photographs and captions of the Bahamas in as many publications as possible. The publication of photographs and captions of Nassau and the rest of the Bahamas amounted to invaluable publicity for the country. “Had you had to pay for that kind of advertising, it would just be astronomical,” Mr. Maura said of his work. “But the minute you sent a free photograph to the Society Editor of a newspaper, it was very easy to get them to put it in the newspaper. Every time you mentioned the Bahamas or Nassau, it was free advertising.” Mr. Maura made his contribution to tourism in this way for over four decades with the Bahamas Development Board and Bahamas News Bureau.
