1998 Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient A politician, a businessman, a social activist and a leader are only some of the attributes of Mr. Norman Solomon, the 1998 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
Mr. Solomon is recognized for his continuous contribution to the development of tourism in the Islands of the Bahamas for the past thirty years. One of his significant contributions is the Ardastra Gardens, located in Chippingham. He turned this failing business into a success story after acquiring it in the 1980s, and making improvements to the property. Today, the Ardastra Gardens and Zoo have seen the addition of exotic animals, birds and rare plants and has become a fixture in Bahamian tourism. They have been visited and enjoyed by millions of visitors from around the world. Additionally, they have been highlighted in many magazines and books, and featured on international travel shows. The Ardastra Gardens and Zoo is a teaching tool for Bahamian students learning about different species of animals, including the national bird, the West Indian Flamingo. Students are also taught the importance of conservation on visits to The Gardens. Mademoiselle, “The House that Fashion Built” is another success story for Bahamian tourism and a credit to Mr. Solomon. This retail outlet has catered to tourists and Bahamians alike and has popularized the Androsia fabric by selling it at its stores on Paradise Island, Cable Beach and Bay Street. Mr. Solomon is credited for his efforts to rebuild tourism in the country after the setback of the 1980s. He was a member of The Bahamas Duty-free Board, which evolved into the Nassau Tourism Development Board. He has served tirelessly and quietly as the wit and brains behind these organizations, working closely with the Ministry to provide cultural and other activities for visitors in the downtown area. This man is described as an individual who believes in doing the great things and the small things to make visitors feel welcomed. From consoling visitors who have been injured or attacked, to sending people to the doctor and paying the bill and putting toilet paper in the public restrooms at Rawson Square, he has done it. There are some critics who would say, “Yes, he can easily afford it,” but we must remember, many can afford it and don’t do it. Norman Solomon continues to educate Bahamians about the importance of tourism to the Bahamas and reminds us that “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” '98 Winners Edwin "Apple" Elliott - Music & Entertainment Sean Johnson - Motion and or Still Photography Norma Griffin Johnson - Retail Deborah Nash - Writer Michael Brown - Sports & Leisure Margo Wring - Minister’s Award Anville Brown - Supervisor of the Year Derek Smith - Manager of the Year Joy Smith - Sales Executive of the Year Barbara Foreman - Casino of the Year Christopher Chea - Chef of the Year Pyvonne Rolle-Schmidt - Employee of the Year Dion Strachan - Hotelier of the Year Kenneth & Diane Balcomb - EcoTourism Steven O.
